Lake Wisconsin was formed when the hydro-electric dam was built at Prairie du Sac in 1912...damming up the Wisconsin River.

The DNR estimates that the flow of the Wisconsin River through the lake results in a complete change of water every 4 to 6 days.

Lake Wisconsin covers 9,000 acres with 60 miles of shoreline.

Being a federal waterway...fishing is permitted year-round. The only seasonal fishing is for sturgeon. There are size limits for walleye & bass...which helps provide more and bigger game fish.

Fish you will find in Lake Wisconsin include: walleye, northern, large & small mouth bass, muskie, sauger, sturgeon, channel catfish, perch, bluegill & crappie.

Recreation on Lake Wisconsin includes: swimming, water skiing, sailing, fishing, camping.

There are three down hill ski areas around Lake Wisconsin...great cross country ski trails, many miles of groomed snowmobile trails...and a dozen golf courses within a half hour and 25 courses within an hour of the lake.


Lake Wisconsin points of interest include: The Wollersheim Winery, Devils Lake, Durward's Glen, Parfrey's Glen, the Circus World Museum at Baraboo, a gambling casino, the Merrimac Free Ferry, Gibralter Rock Park, and eagle watching at Sauk City.

Lake Wisconsin is 30 minutes north of Madison, 1 1/2 hours from Milwaukee, 2 1/2 to 3 hours from the Chicago area, and an hour from Stevens Point.
